Energy Projects in Clarington
Over 2 million homes in Ontario get their electricity from Clarington, thanks to several energy projects in the Municipality.
The biggest of these, of course, is the Darlington Nuclear Power Plant. The second largest in Ontario (after Bruce Nuclear Generating Station), Darlington provides 3512 MW of electricity, enough to power a city of 2 million people. It has four reactors of the CANDU type, and came into operation between 1990 and 1993. Visitors interested in learning more about the plant can visit the Darlington Nuclear Information Centre, located at 1855 Energy Drive in Courtice.
Just down the road from Darlington Nuclear is another large energy project; the Durham York Energy Centre, a waste to energy incinerator. The plant burns 140,000 tonnes of residential garbage a year. It doesn't produce electricity on quite the same level as the nuclear plant; it outputs 14 MW, enough to power approximately 10,000 homes.
In the town of Orono is another energy project, this one utilizing wind power. The ZEP Wind Farm Ganaraska consists of 9 large wind turbines, and it generates 17.6 MW of electricity.
Rounding out the power projects in the Municipality is a 4 MW solar farm in Newcastle. The project covers 650,000 square feet of land.
