About Clarington

History

The name Clarington is a portmanteau, a blending of the names of two historical townships in the municipality, Clarke and Darlington. The new name was applied to what was then known as the Town of Newcastle in 1993. The Town of Newcastle had been created January 1st, 1974 by merging the town of Bowmanville with the village of Newcastle and the townships of Clarke and Darlington.

The decision to change the name from Newcastle to Clarington was made to avoid the confusion of having two Newcastles (the town and the smaller village of Newcastle) in the same municipality.

The communities in the municipality have a long and colourful history.
