Clarington home starts up again PDF Print E-mail

Housing starts in Clarington are up again, according to preliminary housing starts data released by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC).

According to the new data, 51 home starts were recorded in Clarington during October of this year, compared to 40 during the same month last year. Town homes accounted for 23 of these starts, while 28 were single family dwellings.

Construction began on a total of 159 new homes during October in the Oshawa Census Metropolitan Area (CMA), which includes Clarington. Total housing starts were up by 43 per cent compared to the same month last year. The highest level of new home construction activity was registered in Oshawa City, where 77 single-detached homes were started.

Year-to-date, starts for both single-detached and multiple-family home types (semi-detached, townhouses and apartments) are more than double the total during the first ten months of 2009.

"Single-detached homes in Oshawa have remained the most popular choice for homebuyers and accounted for more than 80 per cent of local starts,"  says Inna Breidburg, Market Analyst with CMHC's Ontario Business Centre. "Relatively higher prices for single- detached homes in other parts of the GTA should attract a greater share of construction of this type of home in the Oshawa CMA next year."
