Contract workers at the Material Recovery Facility (MRF), located on Garrard Road in Whitby, are currently on strike. However, the Region has said that it is committed to continuing normal curbside collection and processing of Blue Box materials during this time., and notes that the strike does not involve Durham Region employees. While the MRF is owned by the Region, it is privately operated by Metro Municipal Recycling Services Inc. Durham Region has implemented a contingency plan to make sure that there are minimal disruptions to the Blue Box collection service and that proper sorting will occur. According to a Durham Region news release, "residents may notice a delay in the time of Blue Box collection, including collections into the evening hours. The Region realizes that delays may be disruptive, and sincerely appreciates the public’s understanding in this regard." |
