Clarington leads Durham in new home starts PDF Print E-mail

Clarington is driving new home construction in Durham Region, according to new data from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation.

According to preliminary data released by the CMHC, a total of 218 homes were started in May in the Oshawa Census Metropolitan Area (CMA), including 167 single-detached homes and 51 townhouses.

Although total home starts rose by a modest two per cent, starts of single-family homes were up by 26 per cent compared to the same period last year. Nearly 75 per cent of the new single-detached construction last month was registered in Clarington.

A total of 125 new home starts were recorded in Clarington in May. The total for all of Durham Region was 346. The Clarington total was up 71.2 percent over the same period last year.

"Sites available for low-density housing development and infrastructure capacity constraints are playing a greater role today compared to even just a few years ago. The development opportunities available in Clarington are expected to bring more new home construction into this sub-market," said Inna Breidburg, Market Analyst with CMHC's Ontario Business Centre.
