Clarington drives March home sales PDF Print E-mail

New figures indicate that Clarington was the driving force behind new home starts in the Oshawa CMA in March.

Preliminary March figures released by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) indicate that total new home starts in the Oshawa Census Metropolitan Area (CMA), which includes Clarington, increased to 105 units, 38 per cent higher than in the same period last year. Clarington was the source of this growth, while other sub-markets saw construction slow in March. For five months in a row, housing starts in the CMA have been outpacing last year's numbers.

"Oshawa's new home construction market has become better positioned relative to other GTA sub-markets. Higher inventory levels, and more favourable employment and affordability conditions have been supporting new home purchases in the area," says Inna Breidburg, Market Analyst with CMHC's Ontario Business Centre.

March, 2012 housing starts totalled 56 in Clarington, up from 16 in March of last year. A total of 149 starts were recorded in Durham Region as a whole (up 65.6 percent from a year ago), with 105 of those in the Oshawa CMA (an increase of 38.2 percent over last March).
